B. Introduction

Master of Education in Social Studies degree programme is a professional enrichment studies in Social Studies Education for in-service Social Studies teachers and graduates seeking to make career in Social Studies teaching as well as pursue doctoral degree programme in this area of specialization.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the Master of Education in SocialStudies is to widen and deepen the cognitive, affective , psychomotor and methodological base of Social Studies prospective and service Social Studies teachers as well as equip them with requisites skills/ competences for further education to doctoral and post doctoral levels.

D.   Aims and Objectives

To enable Social Studies graduates/ teachers to further their professional training to masters level and develop higher competences in Social Studies curriculum development and instruction for the realization of Social Studies curriculum goals and objectives in the Nigerian Education system. Specifically, the programme is designed to equip service and prospective Social Studies teachers with the knowledge, skill, and attitude and value to:

  1. Implement Social Studies curriculum in the secondary school level;
  2. Improve critical thinking and problem solving skills of Social Studies students;
  3. Instructional resources in classroom situations;Implement and disseminate innovations in Social Studies curriculum; and
  4. Evaluate and use available instructional resources to enhance Social Studies teaching and learning.

E.  Admission Requirements

Candidates for the Master‘sof Education Degree in Social Studies must have of the following:

  1. ―O‖ Level credits or equivalent in five subjects including English and Mathematics;
  2. A first degree honours in Education with a minimum of second class lower division;
  3. A first degree honours in other disciplines with a minimum of second class lower division plus Postgraduate Diploma in Education from a recognized University obtained at credit level;Qualifying examination for all except candidates with second class upper and first class from University of Ilorin;In all cases, candidates may be expected to undergo a selection process involving tests and/or interviews;Evidence that they meet the matriculation requirements of the University of Ilorin; and
  4. Evidence of NYSC discharge certificate or exemption/exclusion certificate is required.

F.  Duration of Programme

  1. The Full-time Masters degree in Social Studies education shall run for a minimum of 18 Calendar months or a maximum of 24 Calendar months .
  2. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 24 Calendar month and a maximum of 36 Calendar months.
  3. For extension beyond the maximum period, a special permission of the University Senate shall be required.

SSE 801    Graduate Seminar in Social Studies Education        2 Credits

Study and discussion of selected topics; preparation and presentation of individual (or group reports) in the approaches area of specialization in Social Studies Education. The course shall be examined by means of a term paper(s). 30h (P);C

Social studies material design and development for teaching. Selection and evaluation of social studies materials and resources. 30h (T);C


SSE 803    Curriculum Development in Social Studies   3 Credits

Principles and determinants of social studies curriculum. Social studies syllabus. Methodologies of Social Studies. Testing and Evaluation. Practical experiences in the development of Social Studies curriculum in selected levels of education. 30h(T); 45h (P);C

SSE 804       Development in Social Studies Education       2 Credits

Social Studies curriculum in Historical and pedagogical context. Education and changes in social Studies. 30h (T);E

Social Studies and Socialization clarified conceptually. Relationships of religion, politics, sociology anthropology etc., with social studies, racism, fascism, ethnicity, apartheid, etc., as socialization models. 30h(T);E

Types of research, method and data. Types of instruments. Types of procedures for data collection. Methods of data analysis. Application of computer in data analysis. Presentation of results and conclusions. 45h (T); C

RME 803     Statistical Methods in Educational Research    2 Credits

Review of Basic Statistical Concepts; descriptive, parametric. Inferential and non- parametric statistics; t-statistic, ANOVA, ANCOVA, Regression Analysis, Chi- square and Statistical techniques for post-hot analysis. Application of computer in statistical analysis. Meaning and results of statistical analysis. 30h (T); C

RME 805   Educational Measurement and Test Construction    3 Credits

Measurement, scale and scaling models. Theory of measurement error. Test construction procedures; item writing, analysis and assembly in achievement, aptitude and non-cognitive tests. Reliability and validity of tests. Practical work in test construction. 45h (T);E

SSE 839     Research Dissertation  6 Credits

Selection and completion of a dissertation in an appropriate area of specialization in Social Studies Education under the guidance of a supervisor and presentation of the project report. 90h (T); C

Students are required to offer 6 credits elective courses in either History,Geography, Sociology, Sociology of Education or Economics.
