B  Introduction

The Master of Education (M.Ed) in English Language Education is appropriate for language educators seeking advanced knowledge and skills in curriculum development and English Language Education. This degree is appropriate for teaching in relevant higher educational institutions which produce English language teachers.

C.  Philosophy

The philosophy of the M.Ed programme in English Language Education is to educate at an advanced level, teachers in English Language to have higher skills to teach, research and practise at various levels of education.

D.  Aim and Objectives

The aim of M.Ed programme in English Language Education is to equip the students with relevant knowledge, research competence, professional skills and attitudes to effectively function and practise as high level manpower in the discipline. The objectives of M. Ed programme in English Language Education are to:

  1. develop professional expertise of students;
  2. develop knowledgeable scholars who will provide leadership in professional practice and intellectual competence in education;
  3. produce educators who are knowledgeable in and committed to the implementation of National Policy on Education;
  4. develop competent researchers in educational theory and practice for the Nigeria education system;
  5. empower educators who can propel social change through education both intellectually, in attitudes, skills, values and worldviews.

E.  Admission Requirements

Candidates for the Master degree in English Language Education must have the following:

  1. ‗O‘ Level credits or its equivalent in five (5) subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
  2. a first degree honours in Education with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division.
  3. a first degree honours in any other disciplines with a minimum of 2nd Class Lower Division plus Postgraduate Diploma in Education from a recognized University obtained at Credit Level.
  4. qualifying Examination for all except candidates with First Class and Second Class Upper Divisions from University of Ilorin
  • evidence that they meet the matriculation requirements of the University of their choice. Evidence of NYSC discharge certificate or exemption/exclusion.

F. Duration of the Programme

  1. The Full-time Master degree in English Language Education shall run for a minimum of 18 calendar months and a maximum of 24 calendar months.
  2. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 24 calendar months  and maximum of 36 calendar months.
  3. For extension beyond the maximum period, a special permission of the University Senate shall be required.

RME 801    Research Methods in Education      3 Credits

Types of research, methods and data: types of instruments, types of procedures for data collection, methods of data analysis, application of computer in data analysis, meaning and results of statistical analysis. 45h (T); C

RME 802    Statistical Methods in Educational Research   2 Credits

Review of basic statistical concepts: descriptive, parametric, inferential and non-parametric statistics, t-statistic, ANOVA, ANCOVA, regression analysis,  chi-square  and  statistical  techniques  for  post-hoc  analysis,application of computer in statistical analysis; meaning and results of statistical analysis. 30h (T); C

RME 805        Educational Measurement and Test Construction        3 Credits

Measurement: scale and scaling models theory of measurement error, test construction    procedures, item writing, analysis and assembly in achievement, aptitude and non-cognitive tests, reliability and validity of tests, practical work in test construction. 45h (T); E

Basic theories of instructional communication and their relationship to learning and instruction, production of assigned instructional materials using photographic, graphic, audio, story boarding and script writing, production skills, students to assist in University media production assignments. 30h (T); C

ENG 805     Advanced Grammatical Theories and Structure of English 2 Credits

New trends and various aspects of grammatical theories and models of grammatical analysis: traditional, structural, transformational, generative, systemic. Nature of the semantic components and  transformations. Morphophonemics as an advanced study of the word form, lexeme and the morphological processes of English. 45h (T); C

ENG 807   Semantics   2 Credits

Organisation of meaning in English. Theories of sentence interpretation, and lexical analysis. Emphasis on illocutionary acts, true value conditions: presupposition, entailment, focus. Predication and performative analysis. Notions of reference, connotation, neologism, semantic field, componential analysis, synonymy, antonym, applied to English: lexical variation in Nigerian forms of English. 45h (T); C
