B.   Introduction

The Master degree program in Educational Psychology gives students a strong disciplinary grounding that allows them to approach education questions with a sociological lens.

Educational Psychology students take common core courses in qualitative and quantitative research methods, creativity, advanced psychology of learning, psychology of development and social psychology.

C.  Philosophy of Educational Psychology

The Philosophy of Educational Psychology is to acquaint students with their responsibilities and knowledge about how human beings learn and change behavior, human beings‘Socialisation process and the environmental factors that facilitate or deter learning. They will be in a position to identify and solve pupils‘ problems through the use of the principles of human growth and development.

Students are also equipped with functional knowledge, skill and attitude that promote peace, security and stability in and out of the school community.

D.  Aim and Objectives

The aim of Master Degree in Educational Psychology is to produce efficient and conscious individuals for the survival of peace, security and stability in the society. The objectives of the programme is designed to train individuals that will:

  1. be capable of identifying and solving pupils‘ problems through the use of the principles of human growth and development.
  2. have positive attitudes towards child‘s strength and weakness as well as towards the learning process.
  3. understand the importance of social behavior and group dynamics in the learning process and also understand the implication of individual differences in school settings
  4. understand the developmental characteristics such as child‘s academic ability, emotion, anxiety, attitudes and other personality characteristics as well as the implications of adolescent‘s behavior for purposeful education.

E. Admission Requirements

Candidates for the Master‘s Degree in Educational Psychology must have one of the following:

  1. ―O‖ Level credits or equivalent in five subjects including English and Mathematics;
  2. A good first degree honours in Education with a minimum of second class lower division;
  3. A good first degree honours in other disciplines with a minimum of 2nd class lower division plus Postgraduate Diploma in Education from a recognized University obtained at credit level;
  4. In all cases, candidates may be expected to undergo a selection process involving tests and/or interviews;
  5. Evidence that they meet the matriculation requirements of the University of Ilorin; and
  6. Evidence of NYSC discharge certificate or exemption/exclusion certificate is required.

F.   Duration of Programme

  1. The Full-time Masters degree in Educational Psychology shall run for a minimum of 18 Calendar months a maximum of 24 Calendar months.
  2. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 24 Calendar months and a maximum of 36 Calendar months.
  3. For extension beyond the maximum period, a special permission of the University Senate shall be required.

EPY 801    Creativity    2 Credits

Theories and concepts of creativity and its relationship to intelligence. Characteristics of the creative individual. Forms and media in creativity. Survey and analysis of major studies on creativity and its possible enhancement. 30h (T); C

A critical analysis of research findings on the general application of psychology to education. Research on intelligence, learning, memory and forgetting, motivation, emotion, learning, evaluation, discipline, mental hygiene and leadership in educational setting. 30h (T); E

EPY 812    Graduate Seminar in Educational Psychology  2 Credits

Reading assignments, discussion and presentation of reports on selected topics by each student in one chosen area of specialization in Educational Psychology. The course shall be examined by means of a term paper(s). 30(T); C

Types of research, method and data, types of instruments; types of procedures for data collection, methods of data analysis, application of computer in data analysis, presentation of results and conclusions. 45h (T);C

Review of Basic Statistical Concepts; descriptive, parametric, inferential and non- parametric statistics, t-statistic, ANOVA, ANCOVA, Regression Analysis, Chi- square and Statistical techniques for post-hot analysis; application of computer in statistical analysis; meaning and results of statistical analysis. 30h (T);C
