B.   Introduction

Master degree programme in Curriculum Development is a professional advancement studies in Curriculum Development for the realization of curriculum objectives at Basic and Senior Secondary School levels. It is also designed to provide formative experiences in Curriculum Development to prospective candidates seeking higher professional competence in this area of specialization.

C.  Philosophy

The school curriculum occupies a strategic position in every educational system. Relevant Knowledge, skills and attitudes in Curriculum Development are indispensable for curriculum implementation, innovation and reform in the school system. Master degree programme in Curriculum Development is accordingly designed to equip prospective teachers and in-service teachers with functioning knowledge, skills and attitudes for effective practice and continuing learning in Curriculum Development in Social Sciences disciplines.

D.   Aim and Objectives

To equip Social Sciences graduates/ teachers with professional competencies to Master level in Curriculum Development and perquisites for further education as well as the realization of school

Curriculum objectives. Specifically, the Master of Education in Curriculum Development is designed to equip the students to be able to :

  1. understand the processes, activities and issues of curriculum development in the school system in general and social sciences specifically;
  2. develop skill for effective participation in curriculum development processes, activities, researches and institutions for the actualization of the objective end of social sciences curriculum in particular and educational system in general;
  3. cultivate positive attitude to curriculum developmental activities, researches, innovations in a changing national and global educational system;place great premium on curriculum development issues and activities in social sciences disciplines and national educational system for the actualization of educational goals and objectives for personal and societal problem solving; and
  4. develop skills for effective involvement in curriculum dynamics in a rapidly changing national and global educational system;

E.   Admission Requirements

Candidates for the Master‘s Degree in Curriculum Development in Social Sciences Education department must have the following:

  1. ―O‖ Level credits or equivalent in five subjects including English and Mathematics;
  2. A first degree honours in Education with a minimum of second class lower division;
  3. A first degree honours in other disciplines with a minimum of second class lower division plus Postgraduate Diploma in Education from a recognized University obtained at credit level;Qualifying examination for all except candidates with second class upper and first class from University of Ilorin;In all cases, candidates may be expected to undergo a selection process involving tests and/or interviews;Evidence that they meet the matriculation requirements of the University of Ilorin; and
  4. Evidence of NYSC discharge certificate or exemption/exclusion certificate is required.

F.  Duration of Programme

  1. The Full-time Masters degree in Curriculum Development in Social Sciences disciplines shall run for a minimum of 18 months and a maximum of 24 months.
  2. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 24 month and a maximum of 36 Calendar months.
  3. For extension beyond the maximum period, a special permission of the University Senate shall be required.

Processes of curriculum design, approaches and principles of curriculum design. Practical design of a given curriculum and trial testing of the curriculum design. 15h (T); 30h (P);C


CDE 803     Curriculum Models                                                2 Credits

Meaning of a curriculum model, discussion and analysis of existing models e.g. objective means-ends designs, broad-field or integration model, process model. Use of curriculum more to design curricula. 30h(T);C

Concept of curriculum during the progressive era, curriculum of the progressive movement, modern concepts of curriculum.The school curriculum in a contemporary world of science and technology. 30h(T);E

Literature review of relevant research studies in curriculum theory: in analysis and development of research interests in curriculum theory. Review of Basic Statistical Concepts; descriptive, parametric. Inferential and non- parametric statistics; t-statistic, ANOVA, ANCOVA, Regression Analysis, Chi- square and Statistical techniques for post-hot analysis.
