B. Introduction

The M. Ed. Adult Education Studies gives room for graduates with excellent performance in their first degree in the field to be exposed to further knowledge and skills. In addition, the specializations being focused are based on societal needs adapted to the needs of the applicants also. The programme provides students opportunities for higher levels of study and research with lectures and seminars in the courses lasting for one session followed by the research component culminating in the submission of a dissertation.

C. Philosophy

The Master of Education in Adult Education Studies is developed to equip graduates with critical thinking and problem solving skills for advanced careers in adult education; and management of human capital for the benefit of their environment and the development of man in the fast and evolving global knowledge driven society.

D. Aim and Objectives

The M.Ed. Adult Education with specialization in areas such as: Management and Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction, Community Development, Gerontology and Social Services, Industrial Education and Training is designed for trainers, instructional designers, instructors, community developers, extension workers and others who seek to advance in a career serving adult learners. Objectives of the programme are to:

  1. develop knowledgeable scholars who will provide professional practice within the context of the global community;
  2. build solid foundation in theory and practice of adult education, especially in areas of specialization;
  3. develop competent researchers in the field for the purpose of addressing contemporary and emerging issues such as poverty, literacy, gender issues and skills acquisition;build capacity for critical thinking, creativity and innovation; and
  4. empower scholars who can propel social change through acquiring competences to function at the highest level of manpower needs in the field within and outside the country.

E. Admission Requirements

Candidates applying for the Master of Education in Adult Education in the Department of Adult and Primary Education must have the following:

  1. O‘ Level credits or equivalent in five subjects including English and Mathematics.
  2. A first degree with honours in Adult Education with a minimum of second class lower division.
  3. A first degree with honours in other disciplines with a minimum of second class lower division plus Postgraduate Diploma in Adult Education from a recognized University obtained at credit level.
  4. Qualifying examination for all except candidates with second class upper and first class from University of Ilorin.

F. Duration of the Programme

  1. The Full-time Master of Education in Adult Education shall run for a minimum of 18 calendar months and a maximum of 24 calendar months.
  2. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 24 calendar months and a maximum of 36 calendar months.

RME 801 Research Methods in Education 2 Credits

Needs for research in adult education: problem identification and articulation by the use of qualitative methods of research; variables, formulating hypotheses; preparation of research instruments; reviewing literature; research questions and designs` techniques of data collection and analysis, interpreting research results; writing research proposals; writing research projects; use of computer and internet as tools in adult education; referencing and formatting, Discussion of theories in adult education with emphasis on Nigeria.
