B Introduction
The programme is designed to extend and expand graduate students‘ general appreciation of the significance of language in human life, through research. This is to enhance not only their oral and written competence and performance but also their analytical skills in the literary explorations.
C. Philosophy
The philosophy of the programme is to gear towards making tangible contributions to Arabic Language and literature, a consciousness of most advanced studies on the subject and being in the vanguard of reference in international study of the subject.

ALI 801 Research Methodology 3 Credits Methods of collecting both oral and written data for the purpose of writing scholarly papers, theses and dissertations. The use of data, i.e. oral, linguistic, statistical, scriptural and other documents in the field of Arabic. Practical assignments. 45h (T); C
ALI 802 Composition and Performance of Arabic Poetry 3 Credits
Factors affecting the composition of Arabic poetry. Arabic poetical themes. Role of emotion and imagination in composition of Arabic poem. The music, and structure of Arabic poetry. Methods of studying and analyzing Arabic poetry. Samples from prominent Arab poets like Imru‘al-Qays, Hassan ibn Thābit, al-Farazdaq, Jarīr, al- Mutanabbī, al-Macarrī and Shawqī 30h (T); C.
ALI 803 Literary Theory and Criticism 3 Credits Development of literary theory and criticism. Special studies of old and new schools of literature and criticism: classical, romantics, realism, islamism, and other literary interactions with philosophy, psychology, sociology, ideology. Modern theory and criticism: semiotics, deconstruction, post construction, gender theories, intersexuality, psycho-analysis and symbolism. 45h(T); C.
ALI 804 Arabic Prosody 3 Credits
Advanced study of Al-cArūd and al-Qawāfī. Sixteen classical metres and their Derivatives. Intensive study of az-Zihāfāt, cIlal, as well as poetic license. Further development in Arabic prosody- al-Muwashshahāt, at-tashtīr, al-takhmīs and al-tasbi‘. Development of free verse in Arabic Poetry. Styles and contents of the poetic works of Abdullah ibn Fodiyo, Muhammad Bello, Waziri Junayd, al-Qadi Umar Ibrahim, Adam Abdullah al-Ilori, Ibrahim Salih al-Husayni, Isa Alabi Abubakar, Kamaludeen Almubarak Ali, Abdul –Hafeez Oladosu, Musa Abikan and Usman ath-Thaqafi. ALI 807 Narratology (Al-Saridiyyāt) 2 Credits
Oral tradition of story-telling in early Arabic literature: asātīrul awwalīn, (ancient tales), an-nadirah (anecdote), al-qissah (story), al-maqamāh (sessions of oratorical display), stories of cAntarah, kalilah wa Dimnah and Alf laylah wa-laylah (Arabian night stories). In-depth study of the evolution of the Arabic drama. Passion plays, tacziyyāt and maqamāt as precursors of the Arabic drama. Study of selected plays from the works of Mārūn Naqqāsh, Tawfīq‘ l-Hakīm, Ahmad Bakathīr, Ahmad Shawqī, Najību‘ l-Haddād Muhammad cUthmān Jalāl, Mahmud Taymūr, Zakariyau Oseni and Abdul-Ghani Adebayo Alabi. Origin and growth of Arabic Rhetoric. (al-Balāgah) Contributions of Abu cUbaydah, ‗ibn Qutaybah, al-Jāhiz, al-Jurjānī, as-Sakkāki, az-Zamakhsharī, al-cAskarī and al-Qazwinī to Rhetoric. Student should choose a topic in the field of Literature in Arabic to be approved by the Department and supervised by a specific lecturer. The study should not exceed 15,000 words (excluding appendices). It may be written in Arabic or English. 270h (P); C
