B Introduction

The programme is designed to extend and expand graduate students‘ general appreciation of the significance of language in human life, through research. This is to enhance not only their oral and written competence and performance but also their analytical skills in the literary explorations.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is to gear towards making tangible contributions to Arabic Language and literature, a consciousness of most advanced studies on the subject and being in the vanguard of reference in international study of the subject.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to develop highly competent, versatile and effective users of Arabic language and literature. The objectives of the programme are to:

  1. equipping students with research and analytical skills in their high studies in Arabic Language and literature;
  2. exposing students to advanced knowledge of Arabic Literature sub-division such as: language in areas such as: poetry, prose, (novel, short stories, art as speech making) and play; and
  3. making students more aware of the literacy diversity and profundity of Arabic.

E. Admission Requirements

  1. All candidates must possess the minimum of five O‘ Level Credit subjects including English and Arabic in WAEC/NECO/Senior Arabic & Islamic Studies Certificates, N. C. E. or Diploma from recognized Universities as special consideration (waiver)
  2. All candidates must possess a B. A. degree in Arabic, or Arabic/Education with at least a Second Class (Lower Division) from a recognized university.
  3. B. A. combined Honours in Arabic and another subject with a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)
  4. Bachelor Degree in related courses such as Islamic Studies, Islamic Law with evidence of in- depth knowledge of Arabic.
  5. All candidates shall be subjected to a selection process, except graduates of Arabic from University of Ilorin with at least Second Class (Upper Division).

F. Duration of Programme

  1. The Full-time: programme shall run for a minimum of 18 calendar months and a maximum of 24 calendar months.
  2. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 24 calendar months and a Maximum of 36 calendar months.

G. Detailed Courses Description

ALI 801 Research Methodology 3 Credits Methods of collecting both oral and written data for the purpose of writing scholarly papers, theses and dissertations. The use of data, i.e. oral, linguistic, statistical, scriptural and other documents in the field of Arabic. Practical assignments. 45h (T); C

ALI 802    Composition and Performance of Arabic Poetry 3 Credits

Factors affecting the composition of Arabic poetry. Arabic poetical themes. Role of emotion and imagination in composition of Arabic poem. The music, and structure of Arabic poetry. Methods of studying and analyzing Arabic poetry. Samples from prominent Arab poets like Imru‘al-Qays, Hassan ibn Thābit, al-Farazdaq, Jarīr, al- Mutanabbī, al-Macarrī and Shawqī 30h (T); C.

ALI 803 Literary Theory and Criticism 3 Credits Development of literary theory and criticism. Special studies of old and new schools of literature and criticism: classical, romantics, realism, islamism, and other literary interactions with philosophy, psychology, sociology, ideology. Modern theory and criticism: semiotics, deconstruction, post construction, gender theories, intersexuality, psycho-analysis and symbolism. 45h(T); C.

ALI 804    Arabic Prosody 3 Credits

Advanced study of Al-cArūd and al-Qawāfī. Sixteen classical metres and their Derivatives. Intensive study of az-Zihāfāt, cIlal, as well as poetic license. Further development in Arabic prosody- al-Muwashshahāt, at-tashtīr, al-takhmīs and al-tasbi‘. Development of free verse in Arabic Poetry. The students should be encouraged to compose a few verses for analysis. 45h(T); C.

ALI 805    Critical Study of Nigerian Literature in Arabic 3 Credits

Styles and contents of the poetic works of Abdullah ibn Fodiyo, Muhammad Bello, Waziri Junayd, al-Qadi Umar Ibrahim, Adam Abdullah al-Ilori, Ibrahim Salih al-Husayni, Isa Alabi Abubakar, Kamaludeen Almubarak Ali, Abdul –Hafeez Oladosu, Musa Abikan and Usman ath-Thaqafi. The Literary prose of Isaac Ogunbiyi, Zakariyau Oseni, Adam Yahya al-Fulani, al-Haqiqi, and Abdul-Bari Adetunji. 45h (T); C

ALI 806    Classical Arabic Poetry 2 Credits

In-depth study, of the profiles and poetry of major Arab poets of the Classical Era (c. 500- 1258 C.E): pre-Islamic, early Islamic, Umayyad and Abbasid history and poetry with emphasis on the texts. Critical analysis of selected poems. 30h (T); E.

ALI 807    Narratology (Al-Saridiyyāt) 2 Credits

Oral tradition of story-telling in early Arabic literature: asātīrul awwalīn, (ancient tales), an-nadirah (anecdote), al-qissah (story), al-maqamāh (sessions of oratorical display), stories of cAntarah, kalilah wa Dimnah and Alf laylah wa-laylah (Arabian night stories). Backgrounds, styles, and contents of selected stories to be studied. 30h(T); E

ALI 808    Arabic Drama 3 Credits

In-depth study of the evolution of the Arabic drama. Passion plays, tacziyyāt and maqamāt as precursors of the Arabic drama. Study of selected plays from the works of Mārūn Naqqāsh, Tawfīq‘ l-Hakīm, Ahmad Bakathīr, Ahmad Shawqī, Najību‘ l-Haddād Muhammad cUthmān Jalāl, Mahmud Taymūr, Zakariyau Oseni and Abdul-Ghani Adebayo Alabi. Four works to be studied in details. 30h (T); C.

ALI 809    Arabic Rhetoric 3 Credits

Origin and growth of Arabic Rhetoric. (al-Balāgah) Contributions of Abu cUbaydah, ‗ibn Qutaybah, al-Jāhiz, al-Jurjānī, as-Sakkāki, az-Zamakhsharī, al-cAskarī and al-Qazwinī to Rhetoric. Modern development in al-Balāghah.The influence of the Qur‘an on the evolution of Arabic Rhetoric Special study of Tafsīru ‘l-Kash-shāf of az-Zamakhsharī, (نهزمخشزي انكشاف تفسيز) as a work of Qur‘ānic Rhetoric. 45h. (T); C.

ALI 810 Modern Arabic Poetry 3 Credits Detailed study of prominent Arab poets of the modern era with examples of their works. Emphasis on Mahmūd Sāmī al-Barudī. Ahmad Shawqī, Macrūf ar-Rusāfī, Jibrān Khalīl Jibrān, ‗Iliyā ‗Abū Mādi, Khalīl Mutrān, Hāfiz Ibrahīm Naziku, l-Malā‘ikah ‗Abu I- Qāsimi sh-Shabbi, Umar ‗Abu Rishāh and Al-Tijani Yusuf Bashīr. 45h (T); C.

Special attention should be paid to the works of al- Bakri, al-Sacdi, ibn Battutah, al-Yacqubi Muhammad Bello, Ibrahim Salih al-Husayni, and Adam Abdullahi al-illory, 30h (T); E.

ALI 899   Dissertation 6 Credits

Student should choose a topic in the field of Literature in Arabic to be approved by the Department and supervised by a specific lecturer. The study should not exceed 15,000 words (excluding appendices). It may be written in Arabic or English. 270h (P); C

Graduation Requirements

To be awarded the M. A. degree, a student must have taken and passed the prescribed number of core and elective courses selected from the approved list, totalling at least 32 units as follows:
