B. Introduction

The programme was introduced in the Department to meet the needed manpower in the areas of specialisation. This programme is designed to enhance academic research in the area of specialty. Subsequently, the programme has helped many students in the field of Islamic Studies to get jobs in tertiary institutions and even to further their research work in the area.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is the strengthening of the intellectual capacity and uplifting the moral standard of students in Islamic Studies, towards equipping them with effective capacity to uphold the teachings of Islam and to foster understanding and analysis of religious sensitivities in Nigeria.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to enable the students pursue courses in Islamic Studies as an academic discipline and as a way of life.

Objectives:

  1. enabling the students acquire a sound knowledge of Islamic Studies including a working knowledge of the Arabic language;
  2. training the students in Islamic history, its growth and development;
  3. exposing the students to the relevance of Islam to Nigeria, West Africa and the rest of the world; and
  4. introducing a basis for sound interreligious understanding through exposure of students to courses in the other two religions relevant to Nigeria i.e. Christianity and African Traditional Religion.

E. Admission Requirements

  1. Five Credit passes in SSC/GCE O/Level or its equivalent subjects including English Language and Islamic Studies.
  2. Relevant Bachelor degree not lower than Second Class (Lower Division) from recognised universities.
  3. Diploma in Arabic and Islamic Studies/NCE in Islamic Studies and other relevant courses.
  4. The candidate must have between3.5 CGGPA or 60% overall in M.A. Islamic Studies with at least a CGPA of 3.5; or 4 and above.
  5. Must have M.Phil in Islamic Studies with a CGPA of at least 3.6.

F. Duration of the Programme

  1. The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 18 calendar months and a maximum of 24 calendar months.
  2. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 24 calendar months and a maximum of 36 calendar months.
