B. Introduction

The programme is basically research oriented and it is designed to train M.Sc. and/or M.Phil. Graduates in Chemistry or Industrial Chemistry. The programme is for graduates of Chemistry seeking to pursue a career in Academics, Research Institutes and Industries.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is the provision of advanced high level training for students towards acquisition of skills in problem solving to make them competent and globally- competitive in conducting independent research in Chemistry.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to expose postgraduate students to advanced research techniques and up-to-date theoretical developments in one of the following major areas of study: Physical, Analytical, Environmental, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry.

Objectives:

  1. Being highly skilled and adequately prepared for further research work;
  2. Being adequately trained and able to train others at all levels of education;
  3. having a good background for careers in industries, research institutes as well as in public services
  4. Being self-employed; and
  5. Providing interested Chemists the opportunity for detailed knowledge of professional practical as consultants in all areas of Chemistry.

E. Admission Requirement

Candidates seeking admission to the Ph.D. programme in Chemistry are required to have the following:

  1. Five ‗O‘ Level Credits or equivalent subjects including English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.
  2. Master of Science degree in Chemistry or Industrial Chemistry from the University of Ilorin or any other recognised university with CGPA of 3.50-5.0 or weighted percentage scored of at least 60% or its equivalent in the final Masters degree examination;
  3. Master of Philosophy in Chemistry or Industrial Chemistry from the University of Ilorin or any other recognised university with at least 60% or its equivalent in the final examination;
  4. Success at the pre-admission interview to be conducted by the department.

F. Duration of the Programme

  1. The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 36 calendar months and a maximum of 48 calendar months.
  2. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 48 calendar months and a maximum of 60 calendar months.

G. Detailed Course Description

CHM 999 Thesis 6 Credits

Candidates will be required to carry out original research in chemistry and to submit a thesis on a topic chosen in consultation with their supervisor and approved by the department. 270h (P); C

H. Graduation Requirements

The Doctor of Philosophy shall be based on research only. The Ph.D. degree shall be awarded on the basis of successful defence of a thesis resulting from original independent research carried out by the student.
