Introduction
The M.Sc. Tropical Paediatrics is a course designed for high level professionals who will be in charge of managing children and adolescents in the tropics. It is community and child focused with student learning approach. It aims to strengthen the capacity of medical doctors to be able to tackle child health issues out side the tertiary centre. It will also enhance the research capacity of practitioners. The course will provide a pool of medical doctors that can work in both private and public sector. It is the hope of the department that it sefforts will translate into better health indices for children in Nigeria. Philosophy The philosophy of the M.Sc. in Tropical Paediatrics is the production of well-trained high level personnel skilled in teaching and research. The program is to be community based, child focused and to put more emphasis on preventive aspects of health care at primary and secondary levels of care.
Aimand Objectives
The aim of the M.Sc. program in Tropical Paediatrics is to provide advanced level training for those who care for children. The objectives are to:
i. improve the understanding of nutrition as an important defence against diseases right from after birth through to adolescence; strengthen the capacity of health providers in caring for children by focusing on peculiarities of the tropics;
ii. study ways of establishing and operating a child health care system which is more communitybasedinordertobridgetheunfavourablegapbetweenthetherapeuticand non-therapeutic health services by emphasizing personal, environmental, social and preventive aspects of health care; and
iii. improve capacity and infrastructure to support research in malaria and other infectious diseases.
AdmissionRequirements
For a candidate to be admitted into the M.Sc. Tropical Paediatrics program he/ she must possess:
Five ‗O‘ level credits to include English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology in one sitting, or
‗A‘level subjects should include Physics, Chemistry and Biology or zoology. A medical degree such as MB; BS or MB; CH or MD and must be fully registered with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, West African Postgraduate Medical College in Paediatrics or its equivalent in Paediatrics at membership Level.
